To celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, we asked members of the Blade staff to tell us about their “Great Canadian Brand.” Here’s what Blade’s Account Supervisor, Pamela Coville had to say:
What is your favourite Canadian brand?
My favourite Canadian brand is Tim Hortons.
When did you first start following/adopting Tim Hortons into your lifestyle?
I can’t even remember a time that I didn’t stop for a Timmies run on a regular basis. Tim Hortons is a staple with my family. My husband and I are addicts and when they came out with Steeped Tea (because I don’t drink coffee) it made me the happiest person on the planet. I didn’t have to deal with a stupid tea bag while I was in my car!
I can remember being across the border with my husband and anticipating getting back home for a Timmies.
What are the core values of Tim Hortons that make you proud to be Canadian?
Tim Hortons speaks to and about Canadians across the whole country. They have featured Newfoundland straight through to BC in their advertisements and have remained a Canadian company (despite being bought out by the U.S.). They use quintessential Canadian imagery – hockey, snow, camping, outdoors etc. and often use relatable human experiences to bring stories to life.
For example, in one of their commercials a couple of kids find their parents coffee cups in their garage. The cups have many years of memories written on them and it really connects with the viewer.
They have also had plenty of success with their Roll UP the Rim contest. I know I’m not the only one who looks forward to the cups and winning prizes even if it is just a free coffee. They continue to grow their offerings, but always remain Tim Hortons, not pretentious but extending themselves and growing their offerings in the food and drink category.
